RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is an XML-based format for distributing Web content. With RSS, you can receive instant updates on news you care about from news sources you select -- and you view these news items when you want without having to visit multiple Web sites.
When you subscribe to an RSS "feed," a simple software application called a news reader checks Web sites you have selected for new information and displays it for you when you want to view it. Free and commercial readers are available for use. Many readers are separate, stand-alone programs; other services will let you add RSS feeds to a web page.
